AFS Returnee Joan Salajan created this painting for AFS Director General Stephen Galatti for Christmas in 1955. Joan had recently traveled to Greece from the United States as an AFS student, and wanted to thank Galatti for her experience. With her painting she included the well-known “Walk Together, Talk Together” AFS motto. Based on an ancient Sanskrit proverb, “Walk Together, Talk Together” symbolized the AFS mission of promoting peace and intercultural understanding among all peoples of the earth. It was first used in print by AFS in 1952, and has since been changed and adapted many times. In 1976 Nobuo Funabashi from Japan presented the motto as a song, which has since been sung in many different tunes and melodies by AFSers all over the world.
