AFS Kenya will provide an intercultural learning and peace education program in 50 Kenyan high schools. This May, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission represented by Hassan Mohamed, and AFS Kenya’s National Director Athman Lali signed a Memorandum of Understanding to implement the program titled Amani (Peace) Clubs Intercultural Learning: Initiative for Peace and Justice for High Schools in Kenya.
AFS is honored to be a part of this newly created partnership which provides a framework for promoting peace through education.
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) was created under the Kenyan Act of Parliament, to address and reduce inter-ethnic conflicts in Kenya. Its mandate is to enhance tolerance, understanding and acceptance of diversity, through strategic educational and training programs. One of its success stories so far is the formation of Peace Clubs in high schools to reduce discrimination and promote diversity.
AFS Kenya will facilitate the Intercultural Learning Programme in selected 50 schools with Peace Clubs. It will also develop a comprehensive work plan for the implementation of Intercultural Learning Programme and provide regular updates on data acquired to the Commission in relation to the programme among other responsibilities.
AFS Kenya had run induction training for officials from the Commission, Ministry of Education and Teachers Service Commission. There will be another induction for Kenya Institute of Curriculum Education soon. This event will be followed by an intercultural learning training of teachers from selected high schools, piloting and implementing activities with students throughout 2019 and 2020.
The intercultural learning program to students will be delivered in January 2020.
