Inspiring Curiosity: Fostering Intercultural Competence for Students, Faculty and Staff—Maximizing (Virtual) Interactivity

Curiosity is at the heart of intercultural competence. It’s what pushes us to learn more about cultural differences. Feeling the urge or the need to know more about others is the beginning of building bridges across cultures.  At a time when borders are closed and the world is more polarized than ever, and the “other” is perceived as a threat,  how can you inspire curiosity in your participants (students, faculty or staff) to help them develop their intercultural sensitivity?

In this virtual training, you will participate in easy-to-adapt experiential learning activities aimed at creating meaningful reflections and enhancing intercultural skills. We will discuss strategies for implementing these activities in different settings, identifying ways to turn such brief experiences into purposeful and long-lasting learning opportunities for your audiences.

Master trainers from AFS Intercultural Programs will lead this highly interactive virtual training. Delivered on Zoom, participants will use audio and cameras while interacting with others in small groups. Come ready to participate!

  • Understand what intercultural competence is and how to develop intercultural competence through experiential learning opportunities
  • Identify tools, frameworks, and activities that will inspire participants’ curiosity and intercultural competence development
  • Learn about strategies for facilitating experiential learning activities, reflections, and more to advance Intercultural competence development

The Art & Skill of Debriefing: How to Debrief Experiential Learning to Maximize Impact

Have you ever participated in an experiential learning simulation, game, or activity and wondered what the point of it was? No lessons-learned, wrap up or closure, just a waste of your time?

Kolb (1984) says, “Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.” And in order to transform experiential learning experiences or activities into meaningful learning filled with “a-ha” moments, they need to be properly debriefed.

This highly interactive virtual training will provide an overview of what experiential learning and debriefing are, different debriefing frameworks, and effective debriefing strategies.

There will be a ‘meta’ aspect to the training, meaning that participants will take part in an activity and the subsequent debrief as participants, then they will analyze the experience they just had from a trainer’s perspective.

Master trainers from AFS Intercultural Programs will lead this highly interactive virtual training. Delivered on Zoom, participants will use audio and cameras while interacting with others in small groups. Come ready to participate and sharpen your understanding of debriefing!

  • Understand what experiential learning and debriefing are and how to maximize impact of both for deep intercultural learning
  • Identify different methodologies/frameworks for debriefing experiential learning activities
  • Identify strategies for effective debriefing and meaningful learning
